Finding diesel generator repairs near me matters most when a standby set has failed during an outage or at the weekly test. Diesel generators are tough, but they hate dirty fuel, flat batteries and light loading. Tell us the kVA, the fault and where the set is, and we pass the job to independent diesel technicians nearby who quote you directly. We are a free quote service only and do not do the repair ourselves. Repairers cover single cylinder portables, canopied home and business sets and large three phase standby generators.
Diesel generator won't start: troubleshooting first
Most diesel generator troubleshooting starts with the basics, and these cover the majority of call-outs:
- Battery and charger: a standby set's battery charger fails quietly, then the set cranks slowly or not at all
- Fuel: water in fuel, diesel bug (microbial sludge) or a blocked filter starves the injectors
- Air in the lines: running the tank dry means the system must be bled
- Controller faults: a low oil pressure or high temperature shutdown that keeps tripping
Black smoke, white smoke and wet stacking
Diesel generator black smoke usually means overloading, a choked air filter or worn injectors. White smoke points to a cold engine, water in the fuel or a failing head gasket. Blue smoke means oil is burning. A set that runs for hours at under 30% load during load-shedding can wet stack, leaving black oily residue at the exhaust. A load bank test and a service often clears it. Remember that sets lose roughly 3% to 4% of output per 300 metres of altitude, so a Highveld set may struggle with a load it handled at the coast.
Parts, fuel polishing and alternator work
Common diesel generator parts include filters, injectors, lift pumps, starter motors, glow plugs, radiator hoses, fan belts and controllers. Where a tank has diesel bug, a technician may drain it or polish the fuel before replacing filters. If the engine runs but there is no voltage, the problem is in the alternator or AVR, covered on our generator alternator repair page.
What diesel repairs cost
Expect R650 to R1,800 for a mobile call-out and diagnosis on a standby set. Battery and charger replacement is about R1,500 to R5,000, injector work R2,500 to R12,000 and a fuel tank clean R1,500 to R6,000. Major engine overhauls on larger sets run to R30,000 and more. Simple faults are usually fixed on the first visit, while injectors, pumps or controllers can take two to five working days to source. If the set is old and parts are scarce, a technician may also quote on a replacement from our diesel generators page.
What to include in your request
- Give the kVA, phase and approximate run hours
- Note any fault code shown on the controller
- Describe the smoke colour or noise if any
- Say when the fuel was last changed or filtered
- Mention access to the site and the plinth
Diesel Generator Repairs for different sites
- Homes: a silent canopied diesel standby set with a flat battery or a failed charger
- Estates and complexes: a communal diesel set for gates and pumps with fuel contamination in the tank
- Farms and smallholdings: a diesel generator on irrigation or a dairy that smokes and loses power
- Shops, offices and restaurants: a canopied standby set that trips on low oil pressure during load-shedding
- Factories, mines and sites: large three phase sets needing injector, cooling or controller repairs on site
- Lodges, venues and events: a lodge diesel generator wet stacking after months of light overnight loads
- Clinics, schools and towers: a hospital or tower standby set that failed to start on its weekly test
