A solar generator is a battery and inverter, charged by solar panels, that supplies 230 V power silently with no fuel and no fumes. The term covers portable power stations, wall-mounted battery inverter systems and solar and generator hybrids that combine panels with a diesel or petrol backup. GeneratorRepair.co.za is a free quote service: you list what you want to power on one form, and we pass it to independent solar and generator dealers and installers, who quote you directly. We do not sell or install systems ourselves.
Battery capacity, inverter output and surge
Two numbers matter. Battery capacity in kWh is how much energy is stored, and inverter output in kW is how much it can deliver at once. A 2 kWh power station with a 2 kW inverter can run a 100 W router, lights and TV for most of a load-shedding evening, but a 2 kW kettle would drain it in about an hour.
- Surge: fridges, pumps and power tools can draw two to three times their running power at start-up, so check the surge rating
- Battery type: lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) lasts roughly 3,000 to 6,000 cycles
- Heavy loads: geysers, ovens and stoves are usually left off, or run on gas
Charge times: be realistic about solar
Panels give their rated output only in full sun. A 400 W folding panel produces roughly 1.6 to 2 kWh on a clear South African day, so a 2 kWh power station needs most of a day to refill. In a cloudy Cape winter or a wet KZN summer it may take two or three days. Most units also charge from a wall socket or car, so top them up whenever mains power is on.
Solar and generator hybrids
For a whole house, a farm or a business, a solar generator alone is often not enough. A hybrid inverter with batteries and roof panels handles daily load-shedding, while a fuel generator charges the batteries after several dark days or carries heavy loads. Many owners pair batteries with an inverter generator or a diesel generator on an automatic transfer switch. For long outages, borehole pumps or three phase motors, a fuel generator is still the practical choice.
Portable or installed solar generator
A portable power station simply plugs in, with no electrician needed. A fixed battery inverter system wired into your DB board needs a registered electrician, a Certificate of Compliance under SANS 10142-1 and, for grid-tied systems, municipal registration. Keep batteries out of direct sun, as heat shortens their life.
What to include in your request
- List the appliances and hours you need to run
- Say portable or installed into the DB board
- Mention roof space and direction for panels
- Say whether you already own a fuel generator
- Ask for battery kWh, inverter kW and surge figures
Solar Generators for different sites
- Homes: a power station or battery inverter for lights, Wi-Fi, TV and the fridge
- Estates and complexes: battery backup for the gate motor, CCTV and guardhouse with panels on the roof
- Farms and smallholdings: solar batteries for the farmhouse plus a diesel set for the borehole and pumps
- Shops, offices and restaurants: a battery inverter keeping tills, card machines, Wi-Fi and lights on
- Factories, mines and sites: solar battery backup for the site office, security and control systems
- Lodges, venues and events: silent solar power for a remote lodge, campsite or outdoor event
- Clinics, schools and towers: battery and panel backup for a clinic, school or cell tower
