Generators in Midrand

Midrand sits between Johannesburg and Pretoria and is packed with data centres, logistics warehouses, corporate headquarters and new residential estates. Waterfall and Kyalami have strict estate rules on noise, so soundproofed sets with automatic transfer switches dominate home installations. Data halls and distribution centres run large diesel gensets with load bank testing and synchronised panels, since even a short interruption costs a great deal. Older areas such as Halfway House and Vorna Valley see substation trips and theft of copper cable. Construction across the area keeps hire units in demand. Highveld altitude and summer storms add to the load on generators and transfer switches alike.

Typical generator changeover switch requests in the area come from:

• Shops, offices and restaurants: an essential circuits board on a changeover for tills, lights and the alarm
• Estates and complexes: a changeover per unit where body corporate rules allow small quiet generators
• Factories, mines and sites: three phase manual changeovers for site offices, workshops and hired generators
• Clinics, schools and towers: a manual changeover at a church, school hall or small clinic with a portable set
• Homes: a rotary changeover and outside inlet so the petrol generator runs lights, plugs and the fridge
• Lodges, venues and events: a changeover at a guesthouse or venue so a hired generator connects safely

Local conditions in Midrand

The main thing that wears out generators in Midrand is lightning surges and heavy continuous loads, so ask for surge protection on the ATS and a load bank test after any major repair. A set that is looked after for local conditions starts first time when the power goes off.

At about 1 550 m above sea level, expect roughly 6% less output than the nameplate rating from a naturally aspirated engine, and summer highs around 27 °C. Generator Changeover Switch usually covers 2 to 100 kVA, petrol, diesel, LPG or dual fuel.

What to include in your request

• Give the generator kVA and fuel type
• Say whether you want whole house or essential circuits
• Send a photo of the distribution board
• Mention any inverter or battery system
• Say where the generator will stand outside

The more detail you give, the more accurate your quote will be.
