Generators in Secunda
Secunda exists because of its synthetic fuels complex, and the plant's major shutdowns bring hundreds of contractors who hire generators, lighting towers and welding sets for weeks at a time. Coal mines around Evander, Kinross and Trichardt add steady demand for pump and workshop gensets. Households in town and on smallholdings keep standby units because municipal outages and cable theft still interrupt supply, and some estates have installed shared generators with automatic changeover. Chemical-laden air near the plant corrodes cheap canopies and terminals, while summer thunderstorms test earthing and control boards. Local technicians handle most services, with larger alternator and engine rebuilds sent to eMalahleni or Johannesburg.
Typical used generators requests in the area come from:
- Factories, mines and sites: a used high-hour genset for site power or as a second standby set
- Homes: a used petrol or small diesel unit for load-shedding backup at a lower price
- Estates and complexes: an ex-rental canopied set for the gate, pumps and common lighting
- Shops, offices and restaurants: a trade-in silent diesel set keeping a shop or office trading
- Clinics, schools and towers: a refurbished standby set for a school, church or small clinic
- Farms and smallholdings: a used three phase diesel genset for the borehole, workshop and cold room
Local conditions in Secunda
Local conditions matter: corrosive industrial air is a common cause of breakdowns in Secunda. Specify powder-coated canopy, sealed terminals and regular inspections, and keep the service record with the generator.
At about 1 630 m above sea level, expect roughly 7% less output than the nameplate rating from a naturally aspirated engine, and summer highs around 26 °C. Used Generators usually covers 2 to 250 kVA, diesel or petrol.
What to include in your request
- Give the size in kVA and the fuel you want
- Say single phase or three phase
- Set your budget and maximum run hours
- Ask about warranty and service history
- Request a load test before you pay
The more detail you give, the more accurate your quote will be.
